For the birds on coffee farm
Fresh Cup Magazine
September 2003
Shade grown coffee farms are home to countless species, and the climate region in which coffee is grown are the most diverse areas in terms of species in the world. This is why Café Mesa de los Santos., located in Bogotá Colombia, conducts annual studies in its farms residents and migratory wildlife. The most recent study, conducted by professor Camilo Peraza (Birds), Jairo Perez Torres, Mammal: Andrés Acosta (Amphibian and reptiles), and 15 post graduated biology student from Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá yielded the following results: 17 new bird species were discovered on the farm bringing the total number of known and migratory bird species to 117. The coffee farm is now known to be the home of more than 50 percent of the total number of bird species recorded inhabiting coffee lands in Colombia. On average, 14,5 percent of birds studied were migratory and 85,5 percent were resident species. In addition, three of the birds recorded are new to the kit of migratory bird species living in coffee areas in Colombia. Adding to that, the study determinate Café Mesa de los Santos a healthy habitat for the amphibians, reptiles ad mammals, rounding out the farms beneficial ecosystem.
